October Photo Challenge {Recap}

November 6, 2012

Like last year, along with many other bloggers/tweeters/instagramers, I participated in the Our Wired Lives October Photography Challenge. This year's prompts were:

I posted my pictures via instagram (all my instagram photos are view-able here):

Days 1-12

Days 15, 16, 20

Days 24, 25, 27

Day 30

I didn't get a picture for every prompt, but I'm pretty happy that I completed almost 3/4 of them...(and they were not all pictures of dogs and coffee).

The last portion of the month was happily interrupted by a week long adventure in New York (which is captured in a few of the pictures) and my 3rd wedding anniversary with my husband :) Time is flying by- I cannot believe 2012 is almost over!!

Some June Goals

May 21, 2012

I am horrible at planning and implementing goals.  I usually make long lists of them, and then only get around to doing a handful.  I think part of the problem is that I get incredibly overwhelmed by the big picture, so perhaps looking at things in a smaller version will help me get things done.  I'm going to try one month at a time, and if that's too much... I guess I'll break it down week by week.  Anyways, here is this months goals for moi:

1. Train for this.  Training started yesterday, and I'm hoping to run at least 3 times a week to increase my endurance. (help!)
2. Healthy Eating. Yeah, we eat horribly- a lot of which is dining out. This month's goal is to eat at home at least 4 days out of the week. I WILL put all of the recipes I've found on pinterest to good use.
3. Organize the craft room. After a big project, this room looks like it's been hit by a tornado.  I hate not being able to find anything, and there is entirely too much stuff in this room.
4. Pending item 3, start a sewing a project.  I have some fabric for dresses I've been wanting to make since last year. And then there's this quilt I need to get started on...

So that's four major goals for this month. I'm hoping by keeping this list short, I can stick to all of them :) Are there any life goals on your horizon?

30 Before 30

July 25, 2011

Two weeks ago, I entered in to the last year of twenties.  I'm actually really excited about the prospect of my 30's and I'm hoping those are the years I finally begin feeling like a "real adult".  I'm still working on the 1001 in 101 (with a little over a year left to complete... eek!), but I wanted to make a list of items that I absolutely want to do before turning 30.  A list of items that I really want to hold myself to, even if I don't get to finish all the items in my 1001 in 101 (and yes, some of them overlap).

  1. Finish the quilt I started sewing for my mom (like five years ago).
  2. Create an outdoor space where my husband and I can go to relax.
  3. Finish my wedding recaps.
  4. Begin and stick to an exercise regiment.
  5. Be more optimistic, act more positively, and try my best to be a happier person.
  6. Read a biography.
  7. Take a camping trip and/or spend more time outdoors (when the temperature finally starts to go down, of course).
  8. Become more organized (both at home and at work).
  9. Start the journey to becoming meds-free.
  10. Eat healthier/ eat less red meat/ eat less processed food.
  11. Eat more meals at home.
  12. Become debt free.
  13. Hang pictures of my husband and I in our house (we still don't have any up- I know. I know!)
  14. Stick to a regular blogging schedule.
  15. Keep a journal or sketchbook.
  16. Sew more, and get better at it.
  17. Learn to read sewing patterns, and become good at it.
  18. Start a craft club.
  19. Open an etsy/big cartel shop- even if it only has one item.
  20. Disconnect from social media a few nights out of the week.
  21. Outline my personal goals for the next 10 years.
  22. Make a list of goals for my husband and myself, as a couple.
  23. Throw a dinner party.
  24. Celebrate a holiday at our house.
  25. Spend more effort on my work attire and dress more professionally.
  26. Take more pictures of my husband and me together.
  27. Create a substantial rainy day fund.
  28. Learn how to take better photographs.
  29. Start an herb or vegetable garden
  30. Start a compost pile.
Here's to year 29!

12.1

December 1, 2010

Ah December.  I'm sort of relieved that NaBloPoMo is finally over.  I've realized that while I really enjoy blogging, doing it every day is a bit much for me.  I think overall, it's been a good experience, and I will be making a better effort to allotting more of my time to blog than I had been in months before this.  Hope my topics weren't too dull for everyone out there and you'll continue to follow me along :)

In other news, I can't believe we only have four weeks until Christmas.  I've developed a strong urge to bake and craft in the last few days, so you can be sure to see lots of that in next few weeks.  Our Christmas tree is up, but I still feel like we need more holiday decorations around our house.  I hate buying more stuff, so I think I will just dig through my stockpile of crafting supplies and come up with something Christmasy from them.

Despite the busyness of this season, I'm looking forward to spending time with my loved ones and enjoying lots of yummy food (which I may regret on 1.1).  What's in store for everyone else this month?

And Happy Hanukkah to you and yours!

Blue Christmas

November 30, 2010

This past Sunday, my father and I attended a service at church appropriately titled "Blue Christmas".  We attended last year too.  As horrible as it is to be missing someone during this season, I am comforted to know that we are not alone.  People go through this every. single. day.  And they get through it and they eventually find some sort of new happiness again.
Even though I know this Christmas will be a teeny tiny bit easier to get through than last year's was (it will be year #2 without my mama), it still feels like there's a huge gaping hole during the holiday season that I'm struggling to fill.  With what? I'm not sure.  I take comfort in the fact that our last Christmas with her was nearly perfect.  Our family did the usual:  sit around the tree while drinking coffee, play the parades on tv and mute the sound, put Christmas records (Bing Crosby anyone?) on while we opened presents, shared smiles, and allowed my mom to take pictures of us.  She loved taking pictures.
I guess I'm just trying to figure out our new routine for the holidays.  Do we scrap everything we did before and start all over?  Come up with some new tradition to carry forth into future Christmas's?  Probably not, but it is hard trying to find a balance between new and old.  And I'm still trying to find the meaning in this season that brings so much happiness and sadness our way, all at once.

Health Care in America

March 22, 2010

I have believed for some time now, that health care in this country has been an issue overlooked. I know it's an issue that causes much controversy and distress for many people, but I also think that over time, it will be a positive change for many, many, many lives.  I know a few other women who have had their share of health issues and insurance woes.  By no means does my story even remotely compare, but here it is:

In 2001, I developed a strange rash on my legs that, over a period of 5 or 6 months, continually got worse and started spreading to my torso, arms, and, at one point, my face and head.  Thankfully, although I was going to school at the time, my parent's insurance continued coverage on dependents through the age of 25.  I had insurance, I had access to doctors both at the University and through my parent's insurance that were good, and I (well, more like my parents) was able to afford the numerous appointments that I made during this period to try to figure out what was going on.  After almost 6 months, I finally got a diagnosis for both the rash (vasculitis) and an autoimmune illness (lupus, which my mom also had).  Thankfully, after receiving the diagnosis, I found a really great rheumatologist and began treatment that caused the rash to go away and solved a number of other ailments that I had (which had been caused by lupus).

Over the last 9 years of living with this illness, I am so lucky to have a very mild version of if.  I have had no organ involvement, and only deal with ongoing joint pain and fatigue which I have learned to live and control. Nevertheless, at the age of 25, after being hired at a small firm, I found myself in a panic because I was on the verge of being without health insurance.  My parent's insurance would no longer cover me, my company, because of it's size, did not offer group insurance (although if it would have, I probably would not have qualified- simply because the pool would have been too small), and I could find NO individual insurance policy that would accept me.  Even though I had little health problems, because I had received a diagnosis of a pre-exisisting condition, no one would qualify me for health insurance.  It was very stressful to go through this realization, and ironically, stress is a contributing factor to how lupus affects me (stress = pain & fatigue).  I wondered why someone with health issues, who is already probably suffering in more ways than one, would be forced to go through such a stressful ordeal.

Finally, after coming to the conclusion that 1) I had a pre-existing condition and 2) I could not qualify for insurance I learned that my only option was to go on COBRA insurance for 18 months and then, when that ran out, I would be able to get on Texas Risk Pool insurance (although I've heard that once you go on that, you can't get on normal health insurance again, even if it's group- this may or may not be true).  Again, I was thankful that I was in a position that I could actually afford the high monthly insurance payment ($500- almost as much as my apartment rental payment).  I was on COBRA for almost 12 months, at which time I moved in with my soon-to-be fiance/now husband and, luckily, I was able to get on his insurance as a domestic partner.

So many aspects of my story are really just luck.  I am lucky that I was diagnosed with lupus relatively early- sometimes a diagnosis can take years.  I am lucky that I have a stable, well paying job.  I am lucky that my husband works at a large company with group insurance.  I am lucky that my illness has been in check for the most part and I have not needed serious treatment and can continue to work.  I am lucky that I have a good selection of doctors and a wonderful rheumatolgist that my insurance covers.  Many people are not so lucky, and those are the ones who will hopefully benefit the most from this new plan.

Happy Holidays!

December 28, 2009

This Christmas was a little bittersweet for me.  It was X and my first Christmas as a married couple, but it also marked the first Christmas without my mom.  We skipped our usual Christmas Eve church attendance and limited the celebration to Christmas day.  We started at my dad's house with lunch, then making the family rounds in Fredericksburg, eating lots of goodies along the way, and ended a full day celebrating Christmas at my dad's house.  But, before we headed home, we made an obligatory stop in Johnson City to see the incredible light display that PEC puts up every year.

It kind of surprises me that no matter how many times we pass by this scene, it never ceases to amaze me.

Hope your holidays were filled with family, food, and just that hint of magic that makes Christmas what it is!

The Pioneer Woman Comes to Austin!

December 4, 2009

I spent most of my Thursday evening, this past week, waiting to get a much coveted signature from this lovely lady.  Ree (a.k.a. the Pioneer Woman) is one of my favorite bloggers (and not just because she too is a basset hound owner).  She is amazingly talented at not only writing, but also at photography, cooking, teaching, decorating, and the list could go on and on.  If you haven't heard of her yet, I highly recommend reading her blog to find out more- I promise you'll get sucked in!

I arrived to Book People at around 5:30.  I am so in love with this book store- the atmosphere is quaint and they have a huge selection of books.  (As a side note:  the staff of Book People were incredibly organized and helpful at this particular event.  This was actually the first book signing I have ever attended and was happy that it ran as smoothly as it did!)

I was determined to stay focused on my mission (meaning I dismissed my longing to frolic next door to Anthroplogie) and proceeded to the third floor to get my wrist band.  By the time I had arrived, they had already gone through three wrist band colors.  There were a lot of people in attendance:

Finally the woman of the hour(s) answered a few questions before heading back upstairs to sign more cookbooks.

In between waiting and frequenting the cafe downstairs, I managed to get Marlboro Man's signature and snag a quick picture.

The time actually passed by really quickly and before I knew it I was here.

And then here.

It was soooo worth the wait.

Organization

March 14, 2009

Last weekend we made a trip up to IKEA in search of more storage for my craft room (which was being taken over by wedding crap,,,,er, supplies). Even though I could have bought a lot more, I limited myself to this:

source

The Billy Bookcase, BB. And yes, I know that I am the last one to get on this train, but I really don't care. Even though I only bought one, I would love to have many some day so that I can recreate this:

Who wouldn't want a library in their home? Anyway, I digress. At this point, I am using BB for craft storage not books. Some before and after pics:

I moved the lovely red bookcase to the other side of the room and put the BB in its place:

Ahh, much better. I love reorganization. My only complaint about this purchase is that it has to be attached to the wall,,, it will fall over if it is not attached, which is a bit scary for me. Oooh and while we were at IKEA we also got this for cheap-cheap,

because you can't shop at IKEA and just by one item. This is my new favorite. I love french-coffee-press coffee.
