Stress

November 19, 2010

I have a really difficult time dealing with stress.  I get incredibly anxious over simple matters.. in hindsight, it's really silly.  I know there are things that can help with this, but I have trouble finding the time fitting them into my schedule (meaning:  I find other, better, more fun things to do).  My most recent experience with this may cause a change in my lifestyle.  For the last month I've been feeling really anxious/ stressed out about various stuff going on in my life (sorry to be vague, but it includes both professional and personal items).  As a result, I had been experiencing a horrible back pain near my neck that would not go away.  Until yesterday, when a majority of the stress/anxiety I had been feeling finally subsided.  Last night I slept through the entire night, without being woken up by pain.  I can't remember the last time I was able to do that.
As of now, I haven't had any serious side effects from the stress I put my body through.  I know that it's possible this will not always be the case.  I'm realizing the importance of setting aside a specific amount of time each and every day to simply relax my mind and body.  I'm going to try to accomplish this through meditation and exercise, so we'll see how that goes.  I've tried some yoga, and, though I really like it, I worry I'm doing it wrong.  So, I may take a class to make sure I'm not causing additional damage.  In the past, I would talk to my mom about stress.  Obviously, this isn't possible anymore, so I need to adapt and try to find other outlets for venting.  If not to my husband, then to a friend or counselor.
I know I'm probably not the only person that has a difficulty with this.  Anyone else have suggestions for managing stress?

I hear you. For the past 15 years or so I've had chronic neck and shoulder pain, primarily driven by stress. Last year, due to wedding-planning stress, I had 3 spasm flare-ups where I couldn't turn my head for weeks! I've tried meditation, yoga, muscle relaxants, physical therapy, everything. The one thing that really worked for me was strength training in the upper back and shoulders, which both loosened up the muscles and improved my posture. Good luck and keep us posted!

i get stress migraines.
Migraine treatment is different than neck/back pain, but I find that when I'm feeling really stressed, I need a long bath, (preferably with the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack playing).

I think finding a good friend is key, as well.

Hey there!
I wish I had really good stress reliever other than deep breathing, prayer and centering myself. I also try to amke sure that I eat as well as I can because that sometimes can contribute to it. I hope things take a turn for the better.

It really runs in the family! I have gotten better at dealing with the anxiety, but still have sleepless nights when there's something I can't stop worrying about. It's not fun and I wish I could find a way to lessen my anxiety as well. You always have aunts and cousins available if you need an ear :)

I get really bad anxiety and panic attacks. Things that I do are: eat lots of sugar! haha Bubble baths, fuzzy pjs, hugging my dog...and a therapist! I also find it a great release to sing in the car at the very top of my lungs. :-)
Sorry you are feeling low and having a hard time coping. (((HUGS)))
